Places of interest

There are many places of interest in the area, most of which will have information sheets in your gîte, otherwise we are on hand to help. All these places are within 2 hours drive of the gîte and a just a sample of some of the places of interest that can be found in the area.

Le Puy en Velay
Near Clermont Ferrand, there are the famous extinct volcanoes, The Puy de Dome, the most famous which can be visited by car. There is also Vulcania, built underground on various levels where you can complete a tour of volcanoes from all over the world - the setting is amazing.

Thiers is the home of the hand made knives and all types of cutlery.

In Le Puy en Velay, there are three volcanic plugs overlooking the town, built on the top of each one of these is a Madonna with child, a monastery and the third has a church. From each of these you get a superb view of Le Puy and the surrounding area.

In the Nature Park of the Volcanoes there are two very good skiing areas - Super Besse and Le Mont Dore. In the summer, the lifts are open for you to visit the summit. The cheeses in this area are superb with Mont Dore and St Nectaire being two of the more familiar ones. There are also good walks to take in some of the lovely views. The source of the mineral water Volvic is in the Park and there is a centre where you can see it being bottled.

There are numerous châteaux in the area, all in various states from fully restored to just piles of stones and the odd wall.
